Preparing a Sealed Collection for Appraisal
How to make an inherited collection easier to evaluate without prematurely selling or opening it.
An inherited collection is often most vulnerable during the first cleanup. Boxes get separated from receipts, lots are reorganized, stickers are removed and unusual items are sold with ordinary material. Preserve the structure first. Optimize later.
Photograph shelves and cartons before sorting
The way a collection was stored can preserve provenance and explain why items belong together. Take wide photos, then label boxes or shelf sections before moving everything into new piles.
Separate categories without destroying groupings
You can create broad groups such as cards, games, toys, media and electronics while keeping case quantities, receipts and old notes associated with the items they describe.
Flag likely standouts
Look for unusual age, pristine condition, low-production variants, strong provenance, complete master cases and items with obvious specialist interest. This is triage, not instant valuation.
Build a minimum viable inventory
For each standout, capture a clear name, year or edition, codes, package condition, seal type and photographs. This reduces the chance that similar-looking variants get confused.
Avoid cleaning for presentation
An appraiser usually learns more from honest original condition than freshly polished, peeled or repaired packaging. Dust can be documented; removed original labels cannot be restored credibly.
Choose the right specialist
A general estate appraiser may help with the overall process, while niche categories can require specialized knowledge. Do not assume one expert is equally strong in games, cards, vinyl and old electronics.

FAQ
Should I get everything appraised individually?
Not necessarily. Triage first. Many ordinary items may be handled as category lots while standout pieces receive individual attention.
Can I use eBay asking prices for the appraisal?
They can help identify terminology, but sold transactions and specialist evidence are more useful than optimistic asks.
Should I throw away empty cartons?
Not until you know whether they are original cases, carry useful labels, or establish provenance for the contents.
